SUMMARY: Manages the production engineering activities in support of Jetway products including Passenger Boarding Bridges, Ground Power Units, HVAC units, Potable Water, etc... Responsible to ensure that all engineering designs are safe, reliable, manufacturability, and marketable. Ensures that engineering projects meet production, research and development schedules. Accountable to ensure the integration of other product design efforts from other product engineering departments provide a complete product package. Ensures that the necessary people, systems, and tools are available to accomplish engineering work. Participates with the Business Operating Team to help set business strategies and tactics and assure the proper engineering support for business objectives. Leads the New Product Development Team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervise and manage members of Engineering:
Motivate employees by creating challenging, rewarding positions which fully utilize their talents, stretch their capabilities and offer career progression paths.
Foster an atmosphere of teamwork and commitment at all levels.
Delegate work and responsibilities appropriately to department managers, matching skills with task requirements and encouraging employee and team growth.
Build depth in the organization by assuring that all employees can perform a variety of task assignments. Coach and counsel employees to maintain and increase this depth of capability.
Define training needs for each direct reporting employee and help to get the training accomplished.
Define objectives so the Bridge Product engineering team clearly understands the expected results in terms of design output and deadlines.
Plan and manage overall engineering departmental expense and payroll budgets.
Manage the organization and output of the Engineering Team:
To meet continuously changing market and business needs.
Combine personal experience and education with product and market knowledge to assure Jetway Systems' products meet the needs of the business.
Set standard practices and procedures and assure adherence.
Maintain a continuous improvement policy so that ways to improve efficiency and quality of both procedures and designs are constantly sought out and implemented.
Direct the design effort so that Jetway products are safe, reliable, manufacturability, and marketable.
Set standards for and oversee design verification to assure integrity and functionality of all systems and components.
Coordinate with other people and departments throughout the company to ascertain business needs are met.
Understand the capabilities of Engineering so that achievable commitments are made and all commitments are met.
Manage the organization and staffing sufficiently in advance to identify and resolve resource constraints before business needs are affected. Balance strategic projects with daily support requirements to maintain effective setting of priorities.
Assure that properly qualified and capable people and effective systems are in place to accomplish the work required of Engineering.
Participate in setting and executing business strategy:
Serve as a member of the Business Operating Team. Work with other members of the team to formulate and execute business strategy and tactics.
Lead the New Product Development team in analyzing, evaluating, and prioritizing major product development projects.
Gain from the Business Operation Team a broad view of the business and use this perspective to help set engineering priorities.
Provide engineering expertise to all areas of the company, both personally and by assigning other qualified people:
Initiate active engineering involvement any time product safety is at issue.
Support Sales efforts where highly technical assistance is needed.
Provide Engineering support to Manufacturing.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of Engineering Team. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in Engineering and fifteen years of related experience. MS or MBA preferred. Applicable experience includes: engineering, design, drafting of manufactured products and associated research and development; project engineering/ project management; manufacturing engineering and/ or management. At least five years experience must be in design, development, and management of manufactured products; at least five years of experience must include management/ supervision of a large organization.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
COMPUTER SKILLS: This position requires the following computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and SytLine and Team Center.
