  • Overview

    The Senior Mechanical Designer is a member of the BHS engineering team that reports to the Group Engineering Director.  This position will work under the direction of the BHS Engineering Director and BHS Program Manager. This position will be responsible for BHS system layouts, structural design, field support, participate and lead others in the design and detailing for BHS conveyor equipment, platforms, header steel and other system components.


    The ideal candidate for this role will be a seasoned professional in the baggage handling system industry with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a senior mechanical design and leadership role. As such, the successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring and guiding additional JBT personnel of all BHS related disciplines, utilizing his/her extensive industry experience to develop new business and opportunities and work directly with JBT Senior Management to continuously improve the BHS groups’ processes and procedures in order to maximize efficiency and profit.



    • BSME or equivalent preferred. Degree from CAD training school in combination with relevant extensive work experience may also qualify.
    • Ten (10) years of experience as a Mechanical Designer in developing Baggage Handling Systems. Exceptionally skilled designers may have a shorter time line.
    • AutoCAD experience in 2D and 3D.
    • Extensive BIM experience (Building Information Modeling)
    • Experience in Inventor, Navisworks and Revit applications preferred.
    • Strong fundamental knowledge of BHS Controls systems, preferred.
    • Extensive experience working to TSA PDGS standards
    • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Basic Analytical skills to extract critical data and translate to engineering concepts.
    • Must have a valid US Drivers License, and the ability to pass an FAA/Customs Security Background Checks.

    • Must possess a passport and be willing to travel as necessary for projects.


    • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports.
    • Strong knowledge and actively engages in the design and development of mechanical conveyor systems for Baggage Handling projects in the AutoCAD 2D and 3D environment, including checking the work of others.
    • Provide on-site field engineering as required.
    • Skilled in BIM coordination using AutoCAD, Navisworks and Revit experience strongly desirable.
    • Mentor other designers in layout and detailing tasks.
    • Able to lead the work of other designers.
    • Assist in new BHS standard designs and concepts.
    • Assist in value engineering measures.
    • Prepare creative cost cutting designs or related drawings or details.
    • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing goals in a timely/self-directed manner.
    • Developing and leading BHS installation, testing and commissioning efforts. This includes office and/or site involvement.
    • Ensure project work is being provided in an environmentally responsible and safe manner.
    • Must document work being performed and keep a detailed log of outstanding issues & progress.
    • Interface and engage contractors to provide quotes/proposals and perform the required scope of work.
    • Performing site inspections to verify subcontractor work is being done correctly, safely and on time.
    • Assist in coordinating all subcontractor activities.
    • Liaising with customers including operations and program management.
    • Responsible for completion of projects and special assigned work.
    • Responsible for managing and utilizing time effectively and efficiently.
    • Responsible for training, mentoring, and following up with staff and subcontractors.
    • Responsible for following the rules set forth in the employee handbook.
    • Create manufacturing details, drawings, and Bill of Materials (BOM).
    • Calculate equipment performance requirements and capabilities.
    • Manage budget, schedule, and scope of design.
    • Identify and raise any issues that may impact project quality, scope, timing, or cost.
